Bar Llebeig – Jesús Pobre

🍺 First Gig at Bar Llebeig

After sorting things out with the gaffer, Jose, and coming off a busy Friday night at the Auld Dubliner in Jávea, Easter Saturday finally arrived.

Having lived in Jesús Pobre for 10 years, I’ve always found it quite difficult to break into any kind of scene here. There have been a few moments — a lunchtime “free beer” session during a Fiesta, a trivia quiz for ex-pats in Bar Rosita’s, and a break, DJ’ing last December’s Village Christmas Fiesta fundraiser — but that’s been about it.

This felt different.

This was a chance to show who I am, what my music is about, and how I can keep a crowd enjoying themselves.

I got in early to set up. The bar is quite narrow, and trying to build a DJ setup through a crowd is never ideal. Sound checks done, I headed home to prepare mentally. Whatever anyone says, playing somewhere new always brings a few nerves — and doing it in a reopened Spanish bar, with a knowledgeable local crowd, adds that little bit extra.

Set up and all ready to go

I needn’t have worried. (Again.)

The first customers in were the Brits, who immediately settled outside in the small frontage area. But with it still being April, the temperature soon started to dip,

and they drifted back inside. Around 6:30, the locals began to arrive, and before long the place filled up nicely, with that familiar rise in background noise that tells you the atmosphere is building.

Once the music kicked in properly, that was it.

A few soul classics — Time by Edwin Starr and Heaven Must Have Sent You by The Elgins — and suddenly it was dancefloor territory.

As the evening went on, I mixed things up a bit — some classic rock dance tracks, and even a request for Bad Bunny, which went down surprisingly well!

We wrapped up around 9pm — my first real experience of a Tardeo session, and hopefully not the last.

As for a full review of Bar Llebeig… that will have to wait.

I was far too busy enjoying myself 👍
